Consumers Head to the Countryside to Buy Pumpkins
This children’s book documents the crowds of urbanites drawn to the rustic farm markets during the early years of auto tourism. Men in suits and women in nice dresses hauling off pumpkins seems silly because it transposes the classic rustic imagery of farmers in straw hats and overalls harvesting pumpkins – yet it is indicative of the turn of the pumpkin market. The urbanites’ demand for pumpkins for holiday rituals and Thanksgiving pie helped spark this new form of rural economic development.
